The heat caused Interstate 287 south to buckle in Riverdale and Montville after bridge joints expanded on Tuesday, forcing lane closures during this morning’s commute.
This morning, the right lane of I-287 south, just south of Route 23, in Riverdale was closed, while the left and center lanes remained open.
In Montville, the left and center lanes were closed, but the right lane and shoulder were open, with drivers allowed to use the shoulder as a travel lane.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation said crews worked overnight to repair the damaged roadway joints and reopened all lanes by 11 a.m.
“The metal roadway joints expanded in the extreme heat, pushing against the concrete causing it to break apart,” the DOT said.
