Family members and friends are mourning the loss of a Monroe-Woodbury High School student who died in a car crash Tuesday.
Police say 19-year-old Alexis Gumusdere was speeding down Route 17 by Arden Road in Tuxedo when he lost control of his Acura and slammed into a tree. Authorities say 17-year-old Lisa Schaeffer, of Central Valley, was a passenger in the car at the time of the crash. Schaeffer sustained non-life threatening injuries and is expected to be fine.
The school district says there are grief counselors at the school to speak with students and staff members and help them cope with Gumusdere?s sudden death. Joneil Gomez, one of Gumusdere?s friends, says many students spent time in the school?s auditorium, which was open to students mourning Gumusdere. Gomez says Gumusdere had a great personality and was known for being friendly and caring.
Superintendent Joseph DiLorenzo says Gumusdere was a promising student with a passion for baseball and a newfound interest in art. He was set to attend college in the fall.
There is no information on funeral arrangements.
