Seven months after a deadly gas explosion at the Boston Secor Houses in the Bronx, hundreds of residents are still living without gas service in their apartments. Now, they are relying on hot plates for daily cooking needs as they wait for a permanent solution.
Residents say the outage has created significant hardships for families, especially for those accustomed to preparing meals at home. Ashley, one of the affected tenants, says she has been unable to cook the way she once did since the January explosion.
"They gave us this hot plate in January when the building across the street burned down," Ashley said.
The explosion, which killed one person and injured dozens of others, left hundreds of apartments without gas service. According to residents, the temporary hot plates provided in the aftermath have become their primary means of cooking for the past seven months.

Ashley says the situation has been particularly difficult for her family. She lives in one of 538 apartments that remain without gas service. She says residents have received little information about when normal service will be restored.
"They didn't give us no updates about when the gas or the electricity will be back on. And we've just been using this," she said, referring to the single hot plate in her apartment.
In a statement to News 12, the PACT partner team at Boston Secor said that most residents have now received electric stoves. According to management, residents were informed during a meeting this week that the stoves are expected to be operational within the coming weeks.
For now, hundreds of households continue to wait for their new stoves to become functional and for life at the Boston Secor Houses to return to normal
