A somber hero's remembrance was held today in Orange County for a National Guardsman who died last week in a military helicopter crash upstate.
A sea of American flags was flown in downtown Warwick as hundreds of people lined the street to pay their respects to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Daniel Prial. His body was escorted by police to Lazaer Smith & VanderPlatt Funeral Home today.
The 30-year-old pilot and West Point graduate was one of three Guardsman killed in a helicopter crash last week during a training exercise near Rochester.
As his family prepares for wake and funeral services this weekend, they say the show of support from the community feels like a "big hug" when they need it most.
"That's what it feels like for me. Everyone's calling, texting, I can feel it. We can feel it,” says Daniel’s father Greg Prial. “Everybody here can all feel the love, it helps ease the blow a bit.”
Prial's parents asked that News 12 extend their heartfelt thanks to the community, saying they're sorry that they are not able to thank everyone individually.
Wake and funeral services will be held at Saint Stephen's Church in Warwick on Friday and Saturday.
Prial will be buried at West Point Cemetery.
