The Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant had 20 emergency warning sirens out of service due to strong storms. Now, Entergy, the plant?s owner, has vowed to install a backup system for the sirens.

The sirens are there to warn residents in parts of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties of an emergency. In Westchester, 11 sirens were out of service. Eight sirens in Rockland and one in Orange were also down. It was just two weeks ago that another powerful thunderstorm knocked the entire siren system offline.

An Entergy spokesman says each of the warning sirens will get a separate backup power source of some kind. Westchester County Executive Andy Spano has been pressing Entergy to solve the backup power issue for the sirens. Officials say it could take two years to get a system designed and in place.
