A report by the U.S. Department of Justice has found that the Mount Vernon Police Department has engaged in conduct that deprives people of their rights secured by the U.S. Constitution and federal law.

The report concluded that the department uses excessive force, conducts unlawful strip searches and makes arrests without probable cause, among other issues. It also found that deficiencies in policies, training and supervision contribute to the department's unlawful practices.

However, the U.S. Attorney's Office expressed encouragement over recent steps taken by the city and department toward constitutional policing.

The Justice Department will hold a virtual community meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. to discuss the report. The meeting is open to the public.

The city sent out a release with a full statement that can be viewed below.
