State Sen. Terrence Murphy and Mount Pleasant Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi are proposing building a fence around the Hawthorne Cedar Knolls Residential Treatment Center in the wake of the recent violence.

In recent weeks, residents of the facility are accused of beating up a restaurant owner after refusing to pay their bill. Another set of residents are accused of stealing an elderly woman's purse and cellphone at the Valhalla train station.

The treatment center currently has a walk-on, walk-off policy, but Fulgenzi says that needs to change.

“A fence would solve a lot of issues. You know the kids have to be there for a reason, but it’s not fair to us to have to worry about our property and our kids walking up and down the streets,” says resident Sylvana Larkin.
