Residents and one local politician are complaining about the city's latest plan to house asylum seekers in two new locations, including a school gym.
The standalone gymnasium at P.S. 188 in Coney Island is apparently serving as a temporary shelter, according to residents and Councilmember Ari Kagan.
"P.S. 188 gym should be used by students and Coney Island community - not as migrant shelter!" Kagan wrote on Twitter.
Kagan says the gym will be accepting 75 men and women and alleges there is no timeframe on their stay.
The mayor's office said in a statement that there were more than 4,200 new arrivals last week, and that "we will continue to communicate with local elected officials as we open more emergency sites."
