For the third time in just over a month, a Middletown taxi driver has been attacked.
The Syndicate Taxi driver picked up three men from the Imperial Gardens apartment complex in Wallkill early Tuesday morning. Police say when the driver reached Brink Avenue in Middletown and asked to be paid, the cabbie was stabbed three times in the shoulder.
When the driver ran off for help, the trio then stole the cab and smashed it into a woman's home, police say. Homeowner Joyce Struble is now dealing with the stress of fixing her house.
In two other attacks, Syndicate Taxi drivers were robbed at gunpoint and knifepoint after picking men up from a Wallkill apartment complex.
The drivers say enough is enough. "Just be on your best guard," says Patrick Burpoe. "[You] can't trust anybody really anymore."
According to the dispatcher, cabbies are now more hesitant to take fares at night. The cab company is considering installing partitions between the front and backseats.
Police are investigating whether the attacks are related. Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call the Middletown Police Department at 845-343-3151.
