Police in the City of Middletown in Orange County say they're seeing an alarming increase in car-related thefts.
It includes stolen cars, catalytic converters and items inside.
Recent surveillance footage shows the converters can be cut off and taken in less than three minutes - costing drivers more than $1,000.
Police are working to find and arrest those responsible, but officers also say there's a lot people can do to prevent the crimes.
- Keep your vehicle locked
- Hide valuables, electronics, purses and wallets from plain view
- Park in busy, well-lit areas
- Never leave your car running and unattended
- Be alert for individuals looking into car windows or trying door handles
- Be alert for vehicles traveling through neighborhoods late at night without their headlights on, as they may be looking for their next target
