A Mount Vernon drum line is trying to find a place to practice outside amid community complaints over the group's noise.
The band rehearsed at Columbus Elementary School playground for about a year until neighbors apparently had enough of the noise.
"Certain individuals in the community saw it as a nuisance,” says band leader Mansa Gory.
Gory tells News 12 the band’s rehearsal was from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., specifically because of rush hour. “We figured folks would still be coming home...We do not intend to be a nuisance.”
Because of the complaints, the band moved rehearsal to a playground in the Fleetwood section of town. Gory says they anticipated with construction going on and a highway nearby that it would act as a buffer against the instruments – but neighbors still complained.
Many residents complained to City Hall, resulting in officials reaching out to the band’s leader.
"They never said you can't rehearse here,” says Gory. “They just said we're getting a lot of complaints and we need to do something about this."
Band members tell News 12 they hope the city can figure out a permanent situation soon.
"Let us play, let us do what we love,” says one member.
