Mt. Vernon parents on edge over staph 'superbug'

There is growing concern in Mount Vernon over a drug-resistant staph infection, known as MRSA. On Thursday, Grimes Elementary School sent home a letter about the possible infection of a staff member.

There is growing concern in Mount Vernon over a drug-resistant staph infection, known as MRSA.
On Thursday, Grimes Elementary School sent home a letter about the possible infection of a staff member. The letter stated that the individual will not return to work until school officials are assured the condition is non existent.
Friday, parents of students at Edward Williams Elementary School, also received a letter alerting them that a student that may have contracted the infection. Due to the statewide concern over MRSA, the letter informed parents on how to prevent the spread of the infection and what signs to look for.
At Mount Vernon High School, gym teachers were disinfecting fitness equipment as precaution. School officials want to take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the potentially deadly bacteria. They also want parents to be aware and informed.
