North Rockland schools superintendent has temporarily suspended all activities of a crew team at a local high school due to safety concerns on the Hudson River.
"The Hudson River is beautiful, that's where they held their competitions and practices over the years," says Superintendent Brian Monahan. "I feel I need to bring some people in to give me a level of confidence that having them practice there is the right choice."
Monahan says he is working with outside experts to determine if staying on the Hudson is safe, but he has also been exploring lakes in the area as an alternative.
In the meantime, crew members say they are trying to get together on their own and get in shape before the beginning of the season.
"This is the one thing that I love to do," says crew member Justin Cardillo. "I don't really play any other sports besides this one, and I enjoy it a lot, so just not being able to do it in general upsets me."
Monahan says the students' safety is his first priority, and he is working as quickly as possible to get the matter resolved.
"We're going to do all we can to get them back on the water," he says.
Crew members hope they would be able to stick to their usual schedule and start practicing on the water by the beginning of April.
