A new apartment complex along the Hudson River in Yonkers has now opened its doors. "Hudson Piers is more than just some new buildings. It's a major expansion to the downtown waterfront," says Moshe Botnick, with Extell Development.
The Hudson Piers apartments and retail space is located at 55 Riverside Drive. Phase 1 of the project is the completion of two of the six rental buildings and several amenities. Future phases will add even more apartments.
Officials say Hudson Piers is the final and largest piece of the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront Revitalization. "With the opening of Hudson Piers, other pedestrians can now access and enjoy a safe and scenic waterfront walkway that's over one and a quarter miles long," says Botnick.
City officials say about 10% of the units are affordable housing. "Yonkers deserves nice things, we want nice things," says Deana Norman, Yonkers city councilwoman for District 1. "I wish we can make it a little bit higher, but we're going to deal with what we have now."
Some residents agree and say it's exciting to see new housing on the waterfront, but the need for more affordable housing in the area is growing. "New apartments and things like that, I think that's a good idea," says Robin Marshall, a Yonkers resident. "More affordable housing is definitely needed in the area, plus I hope other areas open up for affordable housing."
