Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) stood before the Indian Point nuclear power plant yesterday to announce the results of an internal audit of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The audit includes three mandates and one recommendation for the commission. The mandates include NRC access to criminal databases, providing training to identify terrorist activities and regular re-screening of employees against terrorist watch lists.
The recommendation is that during background checks of employees, they should be asked to disclose countries they have visited in the past.
Schumer said the mandates must be in place within 30 days, but the recommendation will be at the discretion of the power plant.
A spokesman for Entergy, which runs the Indian Point facility, says it will do what's necessary and its employees know to expect scrutiny.
