New York Task Force One and New York City's Urban Search and Rescue Team are packing up and making their way to Louisiana to aid with recovery from Ida.
At the request of FEMA - 83 New York emergency personnel are en route. “We are gonna be distributing hot meals, cold water, supplies to clean up. We are there to help,” says Bruce Vesloski, of Carle Place Red Cross 236.
The group expects to arrive in Louisiana in about 24 hours, and says it will get right to work.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden says federal aid is on the way. "The storm is a life-threatening storm. Gov. Edwards, an old friend, has characterized it as one of the strongest hurricanes, the strongest in Louisiana history since 1850.”
Ida continues to pound Louisiana, with strong storm surge bringing water into the streets of a local neighborhood outside of New Orleans. Ida caused flooding, power outages, and wind damage in the French Quarter and across the city.
The storm has now weakened to a tropical storm, but is still drenching the area. At least one person died in New Orleans after a tree fell on a house.
