News 12 tagged along with Mamaroneck police Sunday who were on the waters of the Long Island Sound patrolling for intoxicated boaters.
Every year, Operation Dry Water, a national campaign, raises awareness against boating under the influence. According to the United States Coast Guard, alcohol is the leading contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities and significant cause of on-the-water incidents.
Between July 4-6, boats will be randomly stopped to check for intoxicated boaters, necessary safety equipment and properly fitting life jackets.
Salvatore Gugliara, with the Mamaroneck police, recommended kids under 12 wear life jackets at all times while boating.
