It’s National Nurses Week, a nationwide tribute to the millions of nurses across the country including those in the Hudson Valley who provide frontline care to patients from children to seniors.
They often work in high-stress environments and this year’s theme to the week is “Nurses Make the Difference.” According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, there are approximately 4.7 million registered nurses in the United States and each year.
The weeklong celebration kicks off with National Nurses Day on May 6 and ends May 12, celebrating the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is widely recognized as the founder of modern nursing.
The week serves as an opportunity to increase public awareness about nurses’ roles in community health, patient advocacy and health education.
This year, National Nurses Week coincides with Teacher Appreciation Week.
