President Joe Biden announced Thursday all federal offenses of simple marijuana possession will be pardoned.
"To kind of think families like mine will no longer be separated or even further some will be reunited because of Biden's announcement, I couldn't be more thrilled," said New York Civil Liberties Union Hudson Valley Regional Director Brandon Holmes.
Holmes said the pardons bring the federal government more in line with New York's Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act enacted in 2021, which legalized recreational marijuana and allowed past state convictions for the drug to be reduced or eliminated.
Holmes said expunging records allows people to return to society.
"That is a great benefit to communities where people are going to be able to return to work without that shadow looming over them, and they are also going to be able to get into housing," said Holmes.
