An off-duty police officer fatally shot a man who tried to attack his wife and daughter in their Bedford Park building, according to authorities.
Police say the suspect followed the woman and her 3-year-old daughter into an elevator at 314 E. 201st St. around 11:40 p.m. Saturday. The attacker allegedly grabbed them from behind as they exited the elevator on their floor.
The victims' screams alerted the off-duty cop, who police say ran to their aid. The officer fired at the man, striking him in the torso. Police say the suspect ran from the building, but was caught a short distance away after he ditched his gun.
The alleged attacker was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The officer, his wife and child were taken to a different hospital for evaluation and were released.
