Entergy says it may have discovered what caused some of the groundwater contamination under Indian Point 2.

A pinhole-sized leak was found in a canal used to transfer spent fuel from the nuclear reactor to a large water tank for storage. Both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Entergy say it is too early to determine how significant the discovery is.

It has been two years since the radioactive element tritium was found contaminating groundwater under the facility, and Entergy has tried various methods to determine the cause of the leak.

"None of the evidence suggests that there is an active leak, certainly not a significant one or one that we need to be concerned with, in terms of impacts on public safety or even worker safety for that matter,? Entergy spokesman Jim Steets says.

The leak found in the transfer canal can be easily drained and repaired, and the search for other leaks will continue for at least several more months.
