A Yonkers school went into a lockdown Monday afternoon after an altercation between two students turned violent.

Police were investigating near Riverside High School after a verbal altercation between students escalated into a violent one. Officials say it happened around 2 p.m. One student was injured.

Yonkers police say the student was off school grounds at a Bee-Line bus stop when he and another youth became engaged in an altercation that turned physical. The victim sustained a laceration to his side.

The suspect fled the area, but school officials say they have an idea of who it is.

The victim went back into the school to ask for help, and the building was put on lockdown.

The victim is in stable condition.

Officials are unsure of the exact type of weapon that was used at this time.

"We want kids to focus on their exams and feel safe that they can walk into the building. But unfortunately, in this situation, two students, well really one student, made a really poor decision and what could've been avoided turned into just a bad decision," says Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Aníbal Soler, Jr.

Police are still investigating.
