Orange County legislators met today to consider how to close a $60 million budget gap amid pressure from the public over a plan that would involve layoffs.
A highly criticized proposal that includes dozens of layoffs was tabled last week until today's meeting. Since then many residents have pressured legislators to withdraw the layoff plan.
Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus is asking legislators to focus on offering retirement incentives to hundreds of eligible employees to help close the gap.
Neuhaus says retirement incentives are the first step, but if they don't offer enough savings, layoffs will be included in his proposed budget come October.
