A server in Orange County got a surprise Christmas gift from a stranger over the weekend when a customer gave her an $800 tip as part of a holiday "pay it forward" movement called "Shock and Claus."
Bobbie Sue Jurgens, the unsuspecting server in Newburgh, went to collect the check from her table Sunday when she noticed that the customer gave her quite the Christmas surprise.
The $800 tip was on a $90 tab at Perkins.
"When we all sat down and Bobby Sue came over, we were like, 'Yes! This is the perfect person,"' says Michelle Gannon, of New Windsor.
Gannon calls her gift-giving group of friends and family the "Elf Squad."
"I feel like you get caught up in the hustle with everything going on - the kids, wrapping gifts, shopping and work - and just to be able to slow down and do something amazing for somebody - my heart was exploding last night," says Gannon.
For Bobbie Sue, it couldn't come at a better time. She was out of work for months due to breast cancer.
"It was such a blessing," says Jurgens, of Maybrook. "This year was very rough, but I stayed positive."
She hopes the kindness shown to her will be shown to others this holiday season.
Bobbie Sue says she plans on spending the money on Christmas gifts for her family and 3-year-old granddaughter.
