A Middletown man who police say is responsible for vandalizing several city buildings with graffiti has been arrested.
City of Middletown police say Kevin Herrera, 30, was identified as a suspect following a comprehensive investigation into 29 reported incidents of unwanted graffiti on public buildings and private locations in Middletown, including historic properties like the Paramount Theater and the Middletown and New Jersey Railroad Station.
In each incident, the graffiti was found to be written in brightly colored spray paint with the same initials, words and phrases like, “B.R,” “ROMeO,” “GET MONEY CRU” and “BX.”
Authorities say the vandalism exceeds $25,000 for cleanup due to the intricate masonry stonework and other material damaged by the graffiti, and that additional reports were handled by state police in Town of Wallkill police in their respective jurisdictions.
Herrera was charged by City of Middletown police with three counts of criminal mischief in the second degree, a felony, and released on an appearance ticket to return to court on a later date.
“The crime of making graffiti is not always seen as a serious offense given its artistic nature, and the appeal it has to some members of the community. This case unquestionably demonstrates the destructive nature of this crime and the very negative impact these actions can have upon residents and business owners within the city,” says Chief John Ewanciw. “These writings served no legitimate purpose, are very difficult to erase, and inflicted thousands of dollars in damage to these various locations.“
News 12 reached out to state police and Town of Wallkill police for additional information about the investigations in locations outside of the City of Middletown but didn’t immediately receive a response.
Middletown police say the investigation is ongoing and that additional reports and complaints are still being received. Anyone observing unwanted graffiti on their property is encouraged to contact the Middletown detective division at 845-343-3152 and reference event number 32212–24.
