Police say a woman and her baby were struck by an unlicensed driver who smashed through the front of a barbershop in Yonkers Friday morning.
The car crashed through the barbershop entrance on Lake Avenue, smashing the glass windows and bending the metal bars of the door.
Authorities say the woman and her baby were pinned under the car inside the shop.
"My initial point was that the baby and mother were maybe probably dead," said Flemming Hudson, an employee at nearby Food Town.
But they survived -- two Yonkers police officers were grabbing breakfast when they jumped into action to help free the woman and the baby.
People who know the woman say she works at the bagel shop next door and that Friday was her day off.
Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller says the 36-year-old mother suffered a compound fracture to her leg. The baby, 6 months old, has a fractured skull.
Police say 43-year-old David Poncurack, of Yonkers was the driver of the car. A blood test was performed to determine if he was intoxicated.
They say Poncurack will be ticketed for not having a license and may face additional charges.
