Putnam County is now accepting texts to 911 for all wireless customers.
The new tool can be a lifesaver for those who are unable to make a voice call during an emergency or those who may be deaf or speech impaired.
Officials say to make sure to send your location and type of emergency in your first message. They recommend using simple words and to be ready for follow-up questions.
Authorities say voice calls are still the best and fastest way to contact 911.
