Police are urging residents to beware of an international lottery scam after some in Ramapo recently became a victims of a con.

A Ramapo woman says she recently received a letter in the mail from Canada stating she was the grand prizewinner of a $50,000 lottery. The letter asked that she pay international taxes on the money. She says a check for $3,900 was included to cover the cost. However, the victim was asked to pay more in subsequent letters. After paying $11,000, she realized it was a scam.

Police say clear warning signs to such scams are letters telling stating a person won a lottery they never entered, if they're from international addresses or if they ask the winner to pay taxes. Police are working with the FBI and the Secret Service to find out who may be sending the letters.
