A congressman from the Hudson Valley is looking to provide tax relief with a new bill aimed at the limit on state and local tax deductions.
Republican Rep. Mike Lawler from New York's 17th District has teamed up with Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill from New Jersey's 11th Congressional District to introduce the Middle Class Tax Relief Act.
If passed into law, it would increase the state and local tax cap up to $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for married couples who file federal income taxes together.
Lawler says it would ultimately eliminate the limit for nearly everyone in the area.
Currently both single and married couples are capped at $10,000.
"The objective is to provide real tax relief to people in the Hudson Valley and in the region who are negatively impacted by this cap," said Lawler.
Lawler says the current cap has been felt financially by those in high-taxed states like New York.
"There's a reason New York has led the nation in out-migration. It has nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with affordability, and we need to stem that tide," said Lawler. "SALT is a major component of that."
As News 12 reported last month, Lawler introduced the Marriage Penalty Elimination Act, which would increase the cap on SALT up to $20,000 for married couples who file jointly.
