Parents in Kingsbridge Heights are calling for safer streets outside a school after a student was hit and killed by a car.

Police say in October a car going the wrong way on Eames Place jumped the curb, killing 8-year-old Rylee Ramos and injuring several others outside P.S. 307. After the fatal accident, residents have been volunteering their time to make sure parents and students get across the street safely.

Volunteers set up cones and barricades Friday morning and before dismissal at three intersections outside P.S. 307, so cars are kept out.

The victim's aunt says the Department of Transportation has promised to make safety improvements near the school, including installing two speed bumps.

Volunteers say they have seen safety improve since setting up the barricades, but they say some drivers are still driving recklessly.
