Efforts are underway in Rockland to ban smoking in cars carrying children under the age of 18.
The Rockland County Board of Health is concerned about the harmful effects of second-hand smoke. Members are asking county lawmakers to consider a law prohibiting lighting up in cars where children under 18 are present. The board says there is scientific evidence to back up the fact that second-hand smoke is extremely dangerous, particularly to children.
County Legislator Connie Coker (D-South Nyack) is considering sponsoring the proposal. Most people support the proposed car-smoking ban. However, many also believe the government shouldn't tell an individual what to do.
