A female veteran in Rockland was honored during Women’s History Month with the county’s annual Freedom Award.

Retired U.S. Army Capt. Emily Klinkenborg received the award Monday in Pomona.

She served seven years, including assignments in Korea and Kuwait. She now serves on the Homes for Heroes board and works as head of public relations for the Rockland County district attorney’s office.

During the ceremony, Klinkenborg asked that people also recognize the women who served alongside her and paved the way for others. “Today as I'm recognized for my service, I ask that you also recognize the women who carried the weight before me, who carried the weight beside me, and who continue to carry it now,” she said.

The Freedom Award is given each year to a female veteran in the county.
