The economy may be reopening, but New York's unemployment levels remain much higher than before the pandemic.

There's one Rockland County program helping people get back to work.

Leoncio Gomez is celebrating two months as a contact tracer - a position he credits landing to Rockland Works.

"I was able to take courses, go to interviewing skills, update my resume and finally got a job," he says.

Rockland Works is an adult education program that launched last fall, providing individuals with career training and counseling to either change careers or find a new career.

"We have workshops on resume writing, interview skills, how to address appropriately, professionalism in the workplace, some computer skills classes as well," says Dr. Stephanie Compasso, of Rockland Works.

Since launching, 125 people have signed up and one-third have already been placed in new careers. But with unemployment numbers still four times higher than this time last year, the program anticipates it will a see a spike of more people turning for help.

The program is out of Rockland BOCES, completely free, thanks to grants.

It's already partnered with over two dozen employers, including the Palisades - they're placing participants in everything from corporate to retail from entry level to management.
