The NYC Department of Design and Construction is improving seven intersections throughout the borough to make them safer for pedestrians.
“We love being able to come in and really revitalize the neighborhood. This is one of the projects that really helps pedestrians,” said Franco Mesiti, deputy director at NYC DDC.
One of the main parts of the project involves extending sidewalks to make crosswalks shorter.
“The shorter the distance of the roadway, the less likely accidents happen that can affect pedestrians," says Mesiti.
The DDC is expanding sidewalks, installing new stop lights and poles, reconfiguring water mains and more to improve the pedestrian experience. The team chose locations near schools where there is high pedestrian traffic.
They hope this will make walking to school safer and more comfortable for students and parents.
The project is expected to be complete in one month.
The following intersections are part of this project:
- East 187th Street and Washington Avenue
- East 185th Street and Bathgate Avenue
- East 138th Street and Cypress Avenue
- East 137th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue
- East 138th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue
- East 164th Street and Gerard Avenue
- Jerome Avenue and and 196th Street
