A second death has been reported in connection with the Legionnaires' cluster in the South Bronx, according to the New York City Health Department.

The death comes two days after the department hosted a town hall to address the outbreak. Officials say at least a dozen people have been diagnosed. Ten cooling towers tested positive for Legionella, including Yankee Stadium and Lincoln Hospital.

According to the DOH, the cluster is based in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods - ZIP codes 10451 and 10456.

Officials say the ten cooling towers have all completed the required remediation.

Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin released the following statement on X on Thursday evening.

"I am saddened to share that a second person has died in connection with the South Bronx Legionnaires’ cluster. We mourn the loss of each New Yorker, and our hearts are with their loved ones as they navigate this difficult time.

We are grateful to our local elected officials who have joined us in outreach efforts as we respond quickly to cut off the exposure and investigate cases. All cooling towers that tested positive through initial screening have been disinfected.

Health Department staff are on the ground every day to get the word out, speaking with more than 1,700 community members, distributing over 4,000 pamphlets, and contacting more than 140 organizations in the last week to help folks recognize the warning signs and risk factors.

If you or a loved one has flu-like symptoms and lives, works, or has visited ZIP codes 10451 or 10456, please see a healthcare provider immediately."
