An illegal immigrant who was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender in New York and was wrongly released turned himself into authorities Saturday.
Police say 48-year-old Jose Broudwiack, a native of Peru, entered the country illegally after he was deported when he was convicted of a sex crime in California. He was arrested Wednesday at his North Salem home. However, after posting $10,000 bail, Broudwiack was released, despite federal immigration agents calling for him to be held in jail.
Police say Broudwiack is cooperating with investigators and is in the process of being registered as a sex offender in the state. Police say federal immigration officials are conducting their own investigation into the matter.
Broudwiack is due back in court at the end of November.
