Some Hudson Valley and Westchester residents awakened Sunday to as much as 5 inches of snow, which turned into slush.

The messy conditions caused problems for some drivers, however, the Sprain Brook Parkway in Yonkers was clear by midmorning. The Saw Mill River Parkway was also clear.

Snowplow drivers got out early ahead of the problem. "This storm was bad because of the ice," said Yonkers Department of Public Works Commissioner John Liszewski. "We'd much rather have 2 to 3 inches of snow than an inch of ice."

Some secondary roads in New Rochelle remained messy through the afternoon.
