A Spring Valley teen who pleaded guilty to rape and attempted rape in two attacks was sentenced as a juvenile Tuesday, not as an adult.
Jarad Webb, 16, was sentenced to 10 years in a youth detention center. He confessed to robbing and raping a woman in December as she took a shortcut along a path. Webb also admitted to robbing and attempting to rape a woman in February on a high school football field.
That victim said Webb slashed her throat and taunted her, saying she was going to die. She lived to identify him, which led to his arrest.
After the sentencing, Webb's family lashed out against the system. "He's been taking meds since he was 10 years old," said his mother, Collette Jones. "He's been placed in facilities. When he was brought back out, he was just dumped on us."
Rockland County District Attorney Tom Zugibe said he is very worried about what Webb may do when he's released.
"I believe, based on all the evidence we've seen, that he is a sociopath," Zugibe said. "Despite freely admitting his guilt at the time of the crimes ? he still has shown no remorse whatsoever."
Webb will have to register as a sex offender upon his release, giving authorities greater oversight.
