The New York City Housing Authority?s (NYCHA) plan to end its deficits is not sitting well with some City Council members.

Some Council members say NYCHA?s plan to stay afloat will jeopardize thousands of families across the city. Council members have teamed up with housing advocates to unveil a plan Thursday that would keep public housing affordable. The $35 million budget initiative would help cover the city?s share of the cost of public housing. The initiative would also try to stop NYCHA?s plan, which Council members say puts a burden on low-income residents.

NYCHA?s plan includes increasing rent and eliminating 10,000 Section 8 housing vouchers. However, the Council?s initiative would keep future Section 8 vouchers in the hands of residents. It would also require NYCHA?s rent increase to be scaled back.
