Reports of an active shooter at Crystal Run Galleria in Middletown on Tuesday have been determined to be unfounded, according to state police.
News 12 received numerous calls about a possible active shooter at the mall. State police and other law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, but say any reports are unfounded.
Wallkill Police Chief Robert Hertman says a female caller mistook a shopper, who had just purchased a legal firearm at a sporting goods store in the mall, as a “suspicious man possibly armed with a firearm," but it was quickly determined to be unfounded.
Officials say that the ensuing response by law enforcement and mall management to lock down the facility while armed officers arrived, resulted in widespread panic as misinformation seemed to appear on various social media pages.
