A massive manhunt was underway in Orange County Tuesday for a turkey hunter who an official source says shot another hunter and apparently fled.
The incident happened at Stewart State Forest around 11 a.m. and is where police set up a staging area off Route 207 in the Weed Road parking lot.
Authorities were seen early afternoon bringing in all-terrain utility vehicles, K9’s and flying overhead in a helicopter.
News 12 spoke to a woman at the scene who said her friend’s husband is the victim and that he was shot in the eye. She says he’s in the hospital and that she came down to pick up his truck.
State police say the victim was air lifted to Westchester Medical Center and is in stable condition.
Valley Central put their school ALC at Maybrook on a lockout at noon for about an hour because of the shooting.
Residents nearby posted to social media about seeing police nearby or helicopters flying overhead from their yards, and News 12 later found police blocking off another area of the state forest in Montgomery on Barron Road.
At least eight police agencies are involved in the search including state police, the county swat team and DEC police.
So far, it’s not clear if the shooting was by mistake or if the shooter even knew someone was shot.
The search was called off around 4 p.m. when state police say the unnamed suspect was taken into custody.
Turkey hunting season began May 1 and runs through May 31 in some parts of New York. Hunters must have both a hunting license and a turkey hunting permit.
