Police, hazmat crews swarm Yonkers area after drug overdoses

A road in Yonkers has been reopened after police and hazmat crews swarmed the area near the 4th Precinct Saturday.
Crews responded to the scene on Shonnard Place between Park Avenue and Palisade Avenue Saturday night. Officials say they shut down the street and brought in hazmat crews as a safeguard.
Police confirm that the road closure on Saturday was connected to a drug-related incident that happened Friday on South Broadway. They say they were searching a vehicle that was involved in a fatal drug overdose.
That overdose took the life of 43-year-old Yonkers resident Mauricio Nunez, and left two others hospitalized.
The two men who were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, and are listed as in serious but stable condition.
In a statement, Yonkers police say preliminary investigation suggests that "the three individuals may have been ingesting what they believed to be cocaine inside a van and at that time were exposed to a still unknown debilitating substance that may be fentanyl or a fentanyl derivative."
Police say residents were not exposed to any harmful substances. They are working to identify where the narcotics originated.
