Suffern officials announced Thursday their plan for a partnership with federal officers to target illegal immigrants who break the law.According to officials, more than 25 percent of those arrested in Suffern last year were illegal immigrants. The partnership will include federal training program known as 287g. In this program, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement would cross train four Suffern cops to act as immigration officers, giving them the power to file deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants charged with felonies or DWI.The new program has residents split over the issues. Some are in favor of the new action, hoping it will reduce the crime rate. Others feel that it is unjust to deport illegal immigrants who have been charged but not yet convicted."Wouldn't it be a shame if the person is charged, deported and then for some reason is found not guilty and has already been deported?" said one town resident.Suffern police plan on using the Rockland County Jail to house immigrant detainees, and are currently awaiting county approval.To view interviews about the proposal, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and click on iO Extra.
