Three swastikas were discovered carved into the ice of Foxwood Pond in Suffern Monday, police say.
Residents who were walking near the pond spotted the 15-foot anti-Semitic symbol, along with two smaller ones, and reported the discovery to authorities.
?I was very much surprised it would happen in this neighborhood,? says James Dillon, of Suffern. ?I would not like to think that the people in this neighborhood think that way.?
Police also say a sketch of male genitalia was etched into the surface of the ice, but it has since disappeared.
?I'm surprised someone in this area would do that, considering the religious population,? says Stuart Laduca.
Chief Clarke Osborn, of the Suffern Police Department, says his detectives currently do not have any information that would lead them to the person responsible for carving the hate symbols.
?If they're juveniles, obviously we will get the parents involved and some counseling,? Osborn says. ?Obviously, the symbol and what it stands for is not a good symbol, and that's something we don't want to see in our community.?
Anyone with information about the swastikas is asked to contact the Suffern Police Department at 914-357-2300. All the calls will be kept confidential.
