Police say the 3-year-old Staten Island girl who was killed after being ejected from the car in a crash on the NYS Thruway in Tuxedo may have unbuckled herself.

Investigators say the driver of a Toyota slammed into a SUV carrying five people Wednesday on the southbound side of the Thruway. The child and her father, who was driving the SUV, were ejected from the vehicle. The father was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with severe head injuries.

Just last month, four people, including a family of three, were killed in another horrific crash on the Thruway. Both crashes occurred between the Sloatsburg and Harriman exits where the speed limit is 65 mph. Ramesh Mehta, of the NYS Thruway Authority, says there is no evidence that the increased speed limit is a factor in the crashes. Mehta says human error is responsible for most accidents on the Thruway.
