Tompkins Cove parents are thanking the community and doctors for helping their son, who was struck by a car last year.

Police say Christopher Riello, 21, was struck in December while walking along the Palisades Interstate Parkway after getting into a fight with his friends in a car. Police say Lauren Arico, 21, stopped and helped Riello after striking him; no charges have been filed against her.

Army Sgt. Shawn Butcher then stopped to help Riello on the side of the road. "He covered my son up and stayed with him," said Anthony Riello, the victim's father. "He almost got hit by a bunch of cars. He saved my son from getting hit again."

Riello has had several surgeries at Westchester Medical Center to repair his heart, arms and legs.

"He's come a long way. He's getting so much better," said Mary Ellen Riello, the victim's mother. She's also thankful to her co-workers at the Rockland County Clerk's Office who have started a collection for medical bills.

The family is hopeful Riello will soon leave the hospital to start rehabilitation.
