Family and friends gathered in Ossining Saturday to say farewell to a loved one whose life was cut short by an alleged drunk driver.
Legista Beckford, 33, was killed last week when police say Lisa Shipp, 45, rammed into his SUV on the Sprain Brook Parkway. Police say Beckford then lost control of his vehicle and crashed. According to police, Shipp kept driving but an eyewitness called 911. Police arrested Shipp in Greenburgh and say she had a blood alcohol level of more than three times the legal limit. She's been charged with vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and DWI.
Beckford, who worked for Empress Ambulance, is described by loved ones as someone who had a big heart. He was also a football and track star at Ossining High School and was recently inducted into the school's hall of fame.
Beckford leaves behind a wife and three sons.
