The school where she taught, Anne Hutchinson Elementary, will be closed for the day so students and staff have a chance to attend the services.
The announcement from the school district:
"Dear Members of the Eastchester School Community, Over the weekend, we learned that the wake for Arlene Connolly O’Neill will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Flynn Memorial Home located at 1652 Central Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10710. The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Annunciation Church located at 470 Westchester Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10707.
As you know, Arlene was a beloved fifth grade teacher with more than 20 years of service to our children and families in Eastchester. As a testament to the strong sense of community at the Anne Hutchinson School, nearly all staff members requested to attend the funeral service. In honor of Arlene’s memory and to accommodate our staff during this challenging time, we have made the decision to close the Anne Hutchinson School on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
While we recognize that this is a difficult decision for many parents and families, our primary concern is the health, safety and welfare of all students, while at the same time supporting the countless teachers and students planning to attend the service with their parents on Wednesday.
All of the other District schools remain fully open on Wednesday, Oct. 23. If closure of the Anne Hutchinson school causes an undue hardship to you and your family, we have reserved a very select number of student spots at the Greenvale School. If you feel that you need this additional support for your family, please call this special hotline number (914-793-6130 ext. 4821) and Dr. William Meyer, Assistant to the Superintendent, K-12 Student and Staff Services, will review the circumstances of your situation and determine if an alternate arrangement is possible."
