Officials at the U.S. Military Academy say they'll begin during the holiday break to remove, rename and modify all assets that memorialize the Confederacy or those who voluntarily served it.
There's been pressure on West Point to do this for years, including from Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who led a letter to the secretary of defense and secretary of the Army calling for the removal of assets commemorating the Confederacy.
A commission mandated by the National Defense Authorization Act made a number of suggestions.
West Point's superintendent, Lt. General Steven Gilland, says that a portrait of Robert E. Lee in Confederate uniform in Jefferson Hall and his stone bust in Reconciliation Plaza will be removed.
A bronze triptych at the main entrance of Bartlett Hall will also be removed
By the end of this year, a committee will also recommend names to replace the streets, buildings and areas throughout West Point that are named after people who served in the Confederacy.
