Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah held a virtual panel discussion to inform parents how they can protect their children from human trafficking.

Rocah held the discussion in partnership with My Sisters' Place and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

Some key takeaways were that human trafficking can happen anywhere and to anyone, and that traffickers often use social media as a recruiting tool.

One way to keep children safe is to ask them what apps they're using and if they can show how they use them. Parents should ask their children what they would do if someone sent something that made them uncomfortable and if they've ever sent something online that they wished they could take back.

Parents could also consider restricting their children’s use of tech, such as setting a rule against phones or tablets in the bedroom at night. Another rule could be to require any online friends to also be friends in real life.
